Art Student of the Month:

In future newsletters, this section will feature an art student and their work.  The selection will be based upon superlative work and effort in art class.

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing summer.  I'm looking forward to seeing all my extraordinary art students again....and meeting the new ones! This will be a very exciting year filled with a myriad of creative projects.  This monthly newsletter will help keep parents and students up to date.  Look out for them at the start of each month.

Supplies:

Parents and guardians! If you feel like being generous, we can use the following to help the students' continued success and to support the art program at Odyssey:
glue sticks, rags, Elmer's glue, Clorox disinfecting wipes,  wet wipes, large plastic zip lock bags, magic erase sponges, and handheld pencil sharpeners.

Also, items you likely throw away, such as old newspapers, magazines, egg cartons, brown paper grocery bags, yarn, fabric, plastic or styrofoam trays, and margarine and yogurt containers come in handy so please bring them in.  It may be trite, but your trash just may be my treasure!

Artist's Tip of the Month:

Artists are masters of communicating through pictures, whether it's a story, idea, event, an opinion, or an advertisement.  Next time you see an artwork (in a museum, a picture on a cereal box or magazine, a cartoon on TV, or an illustration in your favorite book) ask yourself what is the artist trying to say?

Next, try to draw a message to a friend or family member using only pictures.  Make it extra special by rolling it into a scroll.  Ask them to write you back and see if they understood what you were trying to communicate.   Remember, don't use any words, just draw pictures.  That's what the ancient Egyptians did!

Artist of the Month:

John William Waterhouse

Waterhouse, a Pre-Raphaelite artists, is famous for his detailed depictions of myths and legends.

How do artists tell stories with pictures?
